The defending champions started off their season on a winning note by beating Birmingham, but were stunned by Owen Coyle’s newly promoted Burnley in their next game. For forty five minutes on Saturday, Wigan Athletic kept them quiet, but Sir Alex Ferguson’s half time talk seemed to have awoken United out of their slumber as they raised their game after the interval.
Wayne Rooney scored his 100th goal for the Red Devils to make it 1-0 on 56 minutes, and his strike partner Dimitar Berbatov added the second two minutes later. The match was over as a contest when Rooney scored his second, but there was still time for Michael Owen to net his first goal in Man United colours. Nani scored the fifth of the game with a wonderful free kick in injury time as the Latics were battered into submission.
Arsenal have been impressive in the lead up to this game, scoring 10 in two Premier League outings. They thrashed Everton 6-1 at Goodison Park on the opening day, and then brushed aside the challenge of Paul Hart’s Portsmouth 4-1 at the Emirates last week. Abou Diaby scored twice in the space of three minutes to put the Gunners 2-0 ahead, and although Younes Kaboul’s header did give Pompey some hope, second half strikes from William Gallas and youngster Aaron Ramsey cemented a comfortable 4-1 win for Arsene Wenger’s men.
Captain Cesc Fabregas missed the midweek Champions League clash against Celtic due to a hamstring injury, and the young Spaniard is a doubt for the visit to Old Trafford. Carlos Vela, Samir Nasri and Johan Djorou are injured for the Gunners, while Manchester United will be without the services of the ever reliable Rio Ferdinand. Jonny Evans is also a doubt with his persistent ankle problem.
If Arsenal beat United at the Theatre of Dreams, it will send out a strong statement of intent to the rest of the league that the Gunners mean business and have the squad to compete at the highest level.
